On the auspicious occasion of Janmashtami, we present to the lotus feet of the Lord, a popular classical dance narrative, Kalinga Nartana Thillana. The "Kalinga Nartana" story is a significant episode from our mythology, portraying Lord Krishna's divine playfulness and unparalleled bravery. One day, young Krishna and his friends were engaged in a lively game of ball by the Yamuna River. As part of their playful mischief, Krishna deliberately tossed the ball into the riverโ€™s depths. Unknown to most, this river was the lair of the venomous serpent Kaliya, whose presence had poisoned the water, bringing misery to all life nearby. With unshakable resolve, Krishna dove into the river to retrieve the ball. As his friends watched anxiously from the shore, Krishna faced Kaliya, who lashed out with his many hoods. Yet Krishna, with divine grace and agility, effortlessly evaded the strikes. In a spectacular display of power , Krishna leapt onto Kaliyaโ€™s hood and began a magnificent dance. Each rhythmic step he exerted subdued the mighty serpent. Realizing Krishnaโ€™s true divinity, Kaliyaโ€™s wives pleaded for mercy on his behalf. Moved by their pleas, Krishna spared Kaliya but ordered him to leave the Yamuna forever, allowing the river to be pure again. This legendary episode, known as Kalinga Nartana, symbolizes the victory of good over evil and showcases Krishnaโ€™s role as both a playful child and a protector.
